EduCity Iskandar Malaysia Sdn Bhd (EduCity) today announces the new 25-meter warm-up pool at Aquatic Center, EduCity to complement the current 50-meter (Olympic distance) swimming pool that was built in 2012. The warm-up pool was built with new additional features that includes a new timing system and a score board that was setup recently in order to be one of Southeast Asia’s ideal destinations to host local and international swimming events.
“The project kicked off in 2019 and we are proud to meet the deadline as 2020 is a great year that is geared towards sports in conjunction with SUKMA Johor in July. As we are targeted to host the football and netball games, the pool is open for the athletes to train before the big events,” said Datuk Ir. Khairil Anwar Ahmad, Chairman of EduCity and President/CEO of Iskandar Investment Berhad.
He added, “Our initiative to promote Malaysia as an ideal education destination is proven a success with EduCity as the gateway for foreign universities to enter and set up their branches in Malaysia. The recent announcement expansion of one of our university partners is a successful testament to IIB’s strategic plan to promote Iskandar Malaysia as a centre of educational excellence.”
“EduCity’s new tagline; Learn. Live. Lead introduces the core values of creating a real-life incubator where we envisioned more partnership with sports organisations and clubs to run clinics and tournaments focusing on our junior athletes. In 2019 alone, we hosted more than 60 events where 80% are mostly sports related events therefore we are more than brick and mortar and instead, envisioned to be the focal point for the sports industry in Asia when it comes to producing talents in sports,” said Wan Ahmad Saifuddin Wan Ahmad Radzi, Managing Director of EduCity.
The current Olympic-size swimming pool at the Aquatic Center has garnered over 30,000 swimmers ranging from professional athletes, national and state swimmers, students and children since it opened its door to the public in 2012. Since then, the Aquatic Center has hosted many swimming competitions and swim clinics and recently made headlines upon the launch of the EduCity Swimming Development Programme (ESDP) in 2019 to promote swimming as a sport at the grassroots level. A number of young athletes from Orang Asli Seletar were recruited to train to compete professionally under this program.
The swimming pool and the warm-up pool are certified by FINA (Fédération Internationale De Natation) or the International Swimming Federation. The development of the warm-up pool took 6 months, with an investment of more than RM6 million from EduCity. The pool measuring 25 metres long is now open to public for training and competition purpose. Fee is RM10 per session and it is open from 8.30 am until 10.30 pm.
