Following the Filipina’s impressive win at ONE: KING OF THE JUNGLE on 28 February, ONE Championship Chairman and CEO Chatri Sityodtong announced that she would be the next athlete to challenge the atomweight queen.
Though no date has been set for this clash due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Lee has thoroughly studied the skill level her foe brings to the Circle.
“I think Denice is a talented rising star,” the Evolve MMA athlete said.
“She is a well-rounded mixed martial arts fighter and I’m excited to face her in the ONE cage.”
Zamboanga arrived at The Home Of Martial Arts in late 2019, making her debut against Malaysia’s top atomweight talent Jihin “Shadow Cat” Radzuan in December.
The Fairtex athlete outsmarted the Ultimate MMA Academy talent throughout the battle, leaving the Circle with a unanimous decision win in enemy territory.
“Denice is a young and hungry fighter. I feel like she is part of the new generation of mixed martial arts. I’ve seen her previous fights, and she is constantly evolving her technique and fight game,” Lee said.
In February, Zamboanga secured the biggest win of her career versus Japanese martial arts icon Mei “V.V” Yamaguchi.
Zamboanga defended everything the former ONE Atomweight World Title challenger threw at her, frustrating Yamaguchi until the final bell.
Both competitors provided the young Filipina a different test, but she excelled at both easily.
“Unstoppable” is an opponent of much-higher caliber, but with a 7-0 record, Zamboanga has earned Lee’s respect.
“I think Denice and her team came up with a very smart game plan, and she managed to execute that in the fight,” Lee said.
“Denice is definitely a dangerous fighter, and I won’t be underestimating her.”
Will it be Lee who leaves the Circle with the gold, or can Zamboanga pull off yet another upset against a top atomweight in ONE Championship?
