Malaysian mixed martial artist Agilan “Alligator” Thani has put the ONE welterweight division on notice ever since his debut in 2015. Throughout his journey in ONE Championship, the Monarchy MMA product has battled adversity and risen to the occasion several times – which makes the “Alligator” one of the most lovable characters.

As he prepares himself for his bout against Yushin “Thunder” Okami at ONE: CENTURY PART I on Sunday, 13 October, we recap his top three career performances.

Dethroning A Legend

Call it spectacular or sensational – Thani’s win over Japanese-Korean martial arts icon Yoshihiro “Sexy Yama” Akiyama at ONE: LEGENDARY QUEST in June was one of the biggest wins of his career. The Sentul native executed his ground and striking skills at maximum capacity, landing a crushing knee to his opponent’s chest during an exchange.

It was a back and forth battle between two determined warriors, but “Alligator” kept his cool as the match entered its final stanza. Both martial artists traded strikes with less than two minutes of the final round left, but the 24-year-old’s forward pressure allowed him to open his rival’s defense and land heavy strikes to the head.

After a mixed martial arts clinic between the pair, all three judges scored the bout in favor of the Malaysian hero.

“Welcome To My World!”

The Malaysian athlete hosted a grappling clinic against Sherif “The Shark” Mohamed at ONE: QUEST FOR GREATNESS in August 2017.

Thani wasted no time shutting down Mohamed’s offense with the clinch, gracefully transitioning to double under-hooks, and eventually going for a slamming takedown in the first stanza. Although Mohamed is known for his brute force, he did not have the chance to unleash his power against the determined welterweight from Malaysia.

The MIMMA Welterweight Champion was on attack mode from the first minute and dominated the Cairo native until the end of the third round.

After 15 minutes of action, it was clear “Alligator” would walk away as winner.

A Quick Hunt

The match-up between Brad “The Vanilla Gorilla” Robinson and Thani at ONE: ASCENT TO POWER in May 2016 had fans on the edge of their seats. Thani put on immense pressure as soon as the bell rang, which left his American adversary backing up to the edge of the Circle.

Sniffing at a potential finish, the “Alligator” snapped at the opportunity and followed through with a picture-perfect takedown. A flurry of hammer fists from side control was more than enough for referee Yuji Shimada to step in and call it a night at the 4:40 mark of the opening round. Check out Agilan “Alligator” Thani’s next bout at ONE: CENTURY ONE in Tokyo, Japan on 13 October.

ONE: CENTURY PART I and PART II feature 28 World Champions, four World Title bouts, three World Grand Prix Championship Finals, and four World Champion versus World Champion matches. No organization in history has ever attempted to throw two full-scale World Championship events on the same day.
